Who Is The Mission Food Access Network (MFAN)?

The Mission Food Access Network (MFAN) includes members of local groups and citizens who are working towards a healthy, sustainable food future for Mission. Our goals are to:

  • Decrease hunger
  • Improve nutritional health
  • Increase local food sustainability

To help reach our goals, we focus on specific food issues related to:

  • Food Production & Processing
  • Food Access & Distribution
  • Food Consumption & Waste Management

What is Food Security?

Food security means that all people at all times have access to food that is:

  • Sufficient
  • Safe
  • Sustainable
  • Suitable to individual needs

in order to have an active and healthy community. Although Mission enjoys a diverse economy and has productive lands and waters, food security is not ensured for anyone, and is a challenge for many. According to the most recent Canadian Community Health Survey, 15% of Mission residents indicate that they struggle with food security. This is higher than the national average of 9%. Let's work towards making food accessible to all!

How Can You Increase Community Food Security?

  • Become part of the Mission Food Access Network
  • Donate healthy foods to local food centres
  • Join the Mission Food Centre’s Harvest Bag Program and / or a community kitchen
  • Buy local and eat with the season
  • Have fresh fruits and vegetables with all of your meals
  • Support and/or participate in community gardens
  • Grow and process some of your own food

MFAN is supported by the Community Capacity Building Strategy, an initiative of the BC Healthy Living Alliance led by the Canadian Cancer Society with funding from ActNow BC and administered by the Mission Community Services Society

Interested in a Community Garden?

Mark and Julie live at 12758 Bell Street in Mission, just one kilometer down the road from Rolley lake. They have a five acre farm and currently sell eggs and assorted fruit and vegetables at the farm gate.

They would like to start a community garden on a one acre section of their land and are looking for like minded people to help plan and start this vision. The idea would be to have a natural chemical free garden with individual or group plots with a small percentage or the harvest going to the food bank. There would be a $20 annual fee to cover insurance.

The land is level, never had any chemicals to their knowledge, there is a small pond that would make a good rest area. They have a small tractor, rear tiller, assorted garden tools to start. They are looking to layout the area, plots, delivery and rest areas etc. over the fall and winter so to be ready for spring.

If you are interested in helping with this you can contact Mark at (604) 462-1337 or at danrico05@hotmail.com.
